Continuing Medical Education: A Primer was written, edited, and published under the auspices of the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education.
The Primer is divided into six parts. The first serves as an introduction, briefly depicting the current scene and noting a few historical factors. The second part explains the elements of effective planning and evaluation, concentrating on the principles of adult education as applied to continuing medical education (CME). The third part focuses on management of a CME office in hospitals, medical schools, state and county medical societies, and specialty societies. The fourth part covers marketing and operational management of CME activities. The fifth part presents helpful information on CME resources, accreditation and credit systems, and peer review relationships to CME. The sixth part covers techniques and technology that have an impact on the provision of CME and will affect future developments in the field.
