To the Editor.—  As president of an academic health science center, I am confronted with the task of managing an institution buffeted by change in health care delivery and financing. I grapple daily with the business side of medicine while insisting on excellence in patient care as a foundation for teaching and research. While it is true that "health-care is a perfect example of an industry in which decisions cannot be made with numbers alone,"1 the numbers cannot be ignored. If physicians are to maintain some control over the health care industry and ensure quality and continuity of care, some of them must be trained in management as well as medicine.
