The Hospice Movement-Reply

ABSTRACT

Before the EDITORIAL on hospices was written in November 1978, the director of information at New Haven Hospice informed me that a total of 585 patients had been treated to that date. According to official New Haven Hospice publications, funding was unclear. The April-June 1976 New Haven Hospice newsletter stated: "The National Cancer Institute has renewed its contract with Hospice for $864,686 plus the previous contract. This will cover the operations of Home Care for 16 months from May 2, 1976, to September 1977." Hospice now states that it received a total of $872,323 from the National Cancer Institute.

The New Haven Hospice annual budget has increased sharply from a low of $278,000 in 1975 to double that amount at present. It is expected to exceed $2 million when the inpatient facility becomes operational. Dividing $1,710,735, the total sum of the 1975 to 1978 annual budgets, by either
