Don't Put the Cart Before the Horse

ABSTRACT

The title admonition is generally made as a reminder that most activities have a sequence that maximizes efficiency and minimizes cost and errors in execution. The acquisition of computer support for a medical practice is probably more sensitive to the sequence in which certain mandatory steps are executed than any other acquisition in the practice.

The importance of what is done and when was illustrated recently by a letter from a solo practitioner who had purchased computer equipment and asked, "How can I apply it to my practice?" This purchase of computer equipment was a clear case of "putting the cart before the horse." Unfortunately, it is not all that uncommon an occurrence as physicians become interested in computerization.
