Clinical Training for Students of Foreign Medical Schools in US Hospitals-Reply

ABSTRACT

In Reply.—  We were pleased to learn of Dr Sujka's positive experience during his clinical rotations in New York hospitals; however, we believe that it was atypical and not reflective of the experiences of most foreign medical school students who receive clinical training in US hospitals. As our article pointed out, the degree of supervision of foreign medical students is highly variable. Although Dr Sujka was "regularly" supervised by St George's faculty members, well over half of the hospitals participating in our study reported that a foreign medical school representative never visited the institution. And although 81% of the hospitals that sponsored training for both US and foreign medical school students did not segregate the two groups, we made no judgments about the degree of supervision for individual students.
