John P. Callan, MD, has begun his tenure as the second Dr Morris Fishbein Fellow in Medical Journalism at the American Medical Association. A psychiatrist, Callan obtained his medical degree from University College in Dublin. He came to the United States in 1965 and settled in Connecticut.
While directing a psychiatric clinic and acting as assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut Medical School, Callan still managed to pursue his interest in journalism. He served as American correspondent for the Irish Medical Times, contributed articles to Medical Economics and Modern Medicine and, until arriving in Chicago, broadcast a daily radio program on health for the general public in Hartford. In 1977 he began the more ambitious project of publishing a monthly consumer health newspaper, Good Health, which, unfortunately, has ceased publication.
