ABSTRACT

First clinical trial brings hope of effective psoriasis therapy  Combination therapy with oral 8-methoxypsoralen (methoxsalen), a photoactive drug, and long wave length ultra-violet light is being used successfully to treat psoriasis patients at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, and the Allgemeines Krankenhaus, in Vienna.The results are preliminary and require further confirmation, even though recent newspaper headlines acclaiming this treatment as a "new cure for psoriasis" have caused quite a stir among the public. The headlines resulted in countless phone calls to physicians from anxious patients, and some criticism from academicians who told Medical News that the research was publicized prematurely outside the medical community.
