ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  A recent visit to the editorial rooms of a medical journal proved to be an unnerving experience. I hope that events of this nature do not disturb the offices of The Journal.Standing beside an editor's desk, I saw a fly crawling among a profusion of scattered papers. As I raised my hand to strike, the editor seized my arm and exclaimed, "Don't! That's Fergus, a friend of R's."The next morning I visited R in his office to ask about Fergus. "Oh, yes," said R, "there's Fergus perched on the 'out box' where he can watch me write.""What do you feed him?"R scorned me with a look. "I don't feed him anything. I don't even give him any of the editorial coffee. Afternoons he forages in the editor's office next door, where there's plenty of rubber cement."During the week I met Fergus on
