Four years have elapsed since the previous edition and 19 years since the first edition of Infectious Diseases of Children by Krugman and Ward. The latest text has acquired a new coauthor, Dr Samuel Katz, whose presence is evident throughout the book. This volume maintains the excellence of its predecessors: it is lucidly written, well organized, extensively referenced, clearly printed, and well illustrated. Although not intended as an encyclopedic treatise of infectious diseases, this book is certainly comprehensive in scope. The 34 chapters range from discussions of cytomegalovirus infections, rubeola, aseptic meningitis, Salmonella and Shigella infections, to syphillis and gonorrhea. The chapters on hepatitis, neonatal sepsis and immunizations have been visibly updated. The new chapter on acute gastroenteritis, with emphasis on recently identified viral etiologic agents and toxigenic Escherichia coli, is a timely addition.
