To the Editor.—
Most of the patients treated by Wartofsky (226:1083,1973) were started on a dose of antithyroid drug that was subsequently reduced. Presumably, the reduction of dosage was in response to thyroid enlargement of hypothyroidism. An alternative to reducing the dose of antithyroid drug in these circumstances is to leave the dose unchanged and to add thyroid extract. I am convinced that this approach to therapy results in far fewer therapeutic failures than does Wartofsky's approach, but I don't know of a systematic comparison to support my idea.
