For weeks I have been pondering the ideas and words of this, my maiden voyage on the editorial pages of JAMA. I have felt the redolence of my predecessors. I am sensitive to the responsibility of editing a journal that is seen by more professional eyes than any other medical publication in the world.
True, I come as a novice editor—but I am a veteran reader. At different times I have also been a clinical teacher, a medical soldier, a department head, and a practicing internist. From each of these vantage points I learned that I needed something a little different from my reading. It is from this "eclectic" aspect that I derived the concept of what I want for JAMA. Its guiding principle will be to educate the practitioner.
