Problems of Medical Licensure

To the Editor:—  The problem of medical licensure by the states is becoming an increasing problem daily. Many efforts have been made to solve this problem and probably the Flex exam, recently instituted by the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States is a step in the right direction. It does not, however, meet the requirements set up by a recent Presidential Commission that asked that all physicians practicing in the United States pass the same examination and be of similar backgrounds so that two standards of licensing physicians will no longer exist.At the present time, the American graduate presents no particular problem. He is a graduate of schools which are regularly inspected and approved. Not only must he graduate from a school with good standing, but the school itself must meet standards set by competent authority. Most American graduates at the present time, at least in
