Graduate Medical Education in the United States

ABSTRACT

Included with the issue of the 69th Annual Report on Medical Education is the 43rd annual report analyzing the distribution and performance of approved internship and residency programs for the academic year 1968-1969.

For the second time, the total number of physicians engaged in graduate educational activities exceeded 50,000. As a result of the change in dimension of these activities, a number of "firsts" are worth noting.

For the first time:

  • the total internship positions offered exceeded 14,000,

  • the total number of foreign medical graduates serving as interns exceeded 3,000,

  • the proportion of foreign medical graduates among all interns exceeded 30%,

  • in the previous five years, less than 75% of available intern positions were filled,

  • the average increase in intern salaries exceeded 25% in one year,

  • the number of residency programs in affiliated hospitals exceeded 3,000 (67% of all programs),

  • the proportion of foreign medical graduates among physicians engaged in
