ABSTRACT

Physicians everywhere are more than ever conscious of the need for continuing education because of the enormous growth of new scientific knowledge. In addition to their normal professional pride and dedication to professional excellence, physicians have been stimulated and encouraged to greater efforts in continuing education by pressures inside and outside the profession. Evidence of their growing interest and concern is contained in the following:

  • • Substantial annual growth in participation of physicians in continuing education programs. Last year, it is estimated that there were more than 300,000 physician registrations in formal continuing education programs. • Increasing emphasis on continuing medical education by state medical and medical specialty societies. A 1972-1973 survey on Continuing Medical Education indicates that 25 state medical associations sponsored formally structured courses for physicians.

  • • Action by six state medical associations to make continuing education a requirement for continued membership. In addition, 13 other state societies
