ABSTRACT

Exam & Mammogram Speed Breast Ca Detection  Study of 60,000 women indicates that clinical examinations combined with mammograms increase the probability of detecting breast cancers before they metastasize.Results from the massive trial of this combined screening method were reported at the 70th annual meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society by Philip Strax, MD, associate clinical professor of radiology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York.Speaking in Washington, DC, Dr. Strax described a project begun in 1963 to determine if the mortality rate from breast cancer could be lowered by earlier discovery of lesions.The project divided the 60,000 women, ages 40 to 64, into study and control groups. The study group has undergone annual clinical examinations and mammograms four times to date.Women in the control group were not screened.
