Radiation Therapy for Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy

ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  I read the article on hypertrophic osteoarthropathy with interest (236:191, 1976). It is not an uncommon problem and presents itself exactly as described in the article.The last paragraph, however, states that therapy and reversal of the symptoms can be accomplished by thoracotomy and vagotomy. Radiation therapy of about 4,500 rads is another modality for reversal of the symptoms, but mention of this, unfortunately, was omitted. There are occasions when three or four tumors are present in both lungs and are not amenable to therapy by the surgical route. Supervoltage radiation therapy, however, can afford a dramatic reversal of the symptoms and prolonged palliation, with a minimum of morbidity.
