Food Poisoning Caused by Carbophenothion

Seven members of a family became ill with symptoms of cholinergic crisis after eating tortillas made from contaminated flour. Six people were hospitalized and four became comatose but all recovered. The flour was found to contain large amounts of carbophenothion, an organophosphate insecticide which acts by inhibiting cholinesterase. The source of contamination is unknown, but evidence suggests that spillage of a liquid formulation of carbophenothion occurred at some time and place after the flour had been packaged and that the insecticide was then absorbed through the bottoms of the sacks.
