ABSTRACT

Grafts Prove Successful With Autologous Skin Kept In Culture 6 Weeks  Normal autologous skin can be maintained in organ culture up to six weeks and then be grafted successfully to small ulcer or burn wounds, a Stanford University dermatologist reports.So far, eight patients with fullthickness burns or ulcers have received the explants, William T. Summerlin, MD, told physicians at the annual meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology.The patients, all male, were between 30 and 75 years of age. In most cases the wounds were present for several months. None showed any sign of spontaneous epithelialization. Five patients had third degree burns covering 3% to 10% of their bodies; two had 3 to 6 cm diameter venous ulcers; one had a 5 cm wound caused by infection; another had a 5 by 6 cm arterial ulcer.The team covered two-thirds of each prepared graft site with fresh
