The best work of its kind today, Ackerman and Butcher's Surgical Pathology has become the standard in the field. The new fourth edition contains substantial additions, and though less than five years have passed since the last edition, readers will want to replace the old version.
The basic organization and content remain the same, but all chapters are updated, and some sections revised extensively. Over 500 references and 100 figures have been added, and quality of illustrations remains excellent throughout. Despite additions, the total number of pages is less, and the book is somewhat easier to handle; the format has changed to double column, with the text broken into smaller paragraphs.
The many excellent chapters which constitute the backbone of the book are Ackerman's work. Words of wisdom and caution concerning pitfalls in diagnosis are well chosen and authoritative, by virtue of his long experience. Clinicopathologic correlations again have been
