ABSTRACT

To the Editor:—  Dr. Resnik's answer to the treatment for chloasma (208:159, 1969) did not state what type of sunscreen is to be used and why.The Meirowsky phenomenon he mentioned occurs one hour after sun exposure at wave lengths above 3,200 A and only darkens preformed melanin in all the epidermal cells. Almost all stimulation of melanin production occurs between 2,800 and 3,200 A (the sunburn spectrum) and the usual trade sunscreens block out only this range. A total sunscreen, the benzophenone-type derivative, would be needed to prevent tanning and, therefore, darkening of the skin in both ranges, above and below 3,200 A.
