This book is an English translation of a Russian text written by members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. After a brief introduction to the theories of carcinogenesis, the first part of the book is devoted to the viral etiology of cancer. The authors have several chapters covering a list of the viruses which cause tumors, the morphology of tumor viruses, the antigenic and immunogenic properties of tumor viruses, and finally the pathogenic potentialities of tumor viruses.
Part 2 is devoted to the immunology of cancer, with several chapters on the antigenic structure of tumor tissue, the immunology of transplantable tumors, and a valuable appendix on some methods of immunologic analysis. My only objection to this book is that the authors have not exerted a critical selection of the references. This is left to the reader to do, a procedure that has both advantages and disadvantages.
