ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  In his letter (235:248, 1976), Dr Bader calls into question the advocacy by Schoenbaum et al (233: 151, 1975) of a policy of offering rubella vaccine to a particular group "as the English do."In their reply, Schoenbaum et al contend that neither "the British nor the US policy is yet ripe for evaluation."I have no intention of intervening in what is clearly an internal US-policy debate, but I am reminded of a story that originated, I believe, in World War I days.A Scottish regiment had just stormed a section of the German trenches, including a dugout, above which was inscribed the legend, "Gott strafe England."A Scottish soldier, showing every evidence of irritation, scored out the word "England" and inserted instead the word "Britain."
