ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  While I sympathize with Dr Harnes' disillusionment in trying to convert the world to the ways of preventive medicine (235:157, 1976), I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel myself. I shall continue to preach nonsmoking, avoidance of alcohol and unnecessary drugs, proper diet and exercise, and other concepts known to promote better physical and emotional health—to the young and healthy as well as to those already suffering from the consequences of the abuse of such principles. I have certain serious shortcomings myself, but I will not allow these imperfections to prevent me from sharing what I know to be true with my patients. My position is not to foist my beliefs, religious or medical, on anyone, but rather to advise them of the facts and let them make the choice.
