The Definition of "Drug"

ABSTRACT

To the Editor:—  I regret Dr. Philip Solomon's acceptance of the current focus on drug abuse to condone a change in definition of the word "drug" (206:1521, 1968):The word "drug" is now widely used to mean only those highly active substances taken for pleasurable, rather than therapeutic purposes, usually with the implication of illicitness and danger. Aspirin, digitalis, etc, are now called "medicines."I doubt the change is quite as he sees it. I think most of us are aware that with respect to marihuana, for example, there is no therapeutic design as drug or as medicine. It is unlikely that the Food and Drug Administration is about to change its name.
