Dr. Junkmann and his coauthors have prepared an organized, detailed, and documented summary of the important world literature on the gestagens (progestins). Progesterone is reviewed in detail, followed by data on the most important of the synthetic steroids with progestational activity that are presently used in medical practice.
The book, written in German, is encyclopedic in nature. Various chapters deal with the chemical and physical properties and the absorption, distribution, excretion, and metabolism of progesterone and the synthetic gestagens; the effect of these steroids on metabolic processes; and their action on organ systems. The section on therapeutic uses reviews data on the use of the gestagens alone and in conjunction with estrogens. Selected readings of the text indicate that every important publication has been included. Although an index is not provided, the detailed table of contents should allow the reader to locate the information desired.
