ABSTRACT

To the Editor.—  I enjoyed reading Dr. Meehan's article "Physician Travelers" (220:97, 1972). However, in her search into antiquity Dr. Meehan has overlooked an important, modern physician traveler, Dr. Clifford Graves.Dr. Graves, a retired surgeon living in La Jolla, Calif, is the president and inspirational source of the International Bicycle Touring Society. In the past 30 years, he has cycled in Europe, Asia, and North America, and he has written scores of fascinating recounts of his adventures. His personal example that the bicycle is a complete and uncompromised alternative to the exalted combustion engine is an achievement of more than rhetorical significance in our ecology-minded age.Readers of Dr. Graves' cycle exploits know that his travels rival any of those described by Drs. Bell, Holland, and others.
