Questionnaire Study of Anesthesia Equipment Sterility

To the Editor:—  A review of the literature concerning the potential hazard of cross infection from anesthesia equipment reveals no agreement about the risk involved. Because of this finding a questionnaire was mailed to all directors of anesthesia training programs in the United States.The questionnaire was designed to evaluate their awareness and concern regarding cross contamination from the anesthesia circle and its parts, the degree of effort made to clean between cases, and the financial value associated with elimination of such contamination hazards.A total of 253 questionnaires were mailed. Three were returned undelivered. There were 157 responses. Some of those who responded did not answer all of the questions. A summary of the questions and answers is given.

  1. The bacteriological status of the anesthetic absorption system was studied by 82 of 155 who responded.

  2. Of 82 studies, 56 showed organisms grown of which 17 types were
