Which would you rather be, braless and liberated, or confined? This is the question women are asking themselves and, judging from a report by the Michigan Avenue Chapter of the Girl Watchers' Society of Chicago, more and more young women opt for unconfinement. (The report doesn't say whether Society members watch older women.)
A question to The Journal about the risk of unsupported mammae becoming pendulous elicited replies from two surgeons (p 625). They agreed that the braless state tends to cause breasts—especially larger breasts—to become pendulous because supporting tissues stretch irremediably. One surgeon (Wulsin) added that despite hopeful legend no amount of exercise will restore pristine mammary profile.
This being so, the author of the question asked whether the AMA should broadcast a warning. Wulsin believes the decision calls for special finesse of judgment in the realm social rather than scientific. Such finesse not being a hallmark of journal
