Rape Victimology is an important and long overdue volume. At last: a book on rape that has compassion for the victims, pays attention to social and legal issues, and makes recommendations that are both valid and valuable. Furthermore, it is well written and readable.
Its format could not be improved on. The atmosphere is set by the rape victim speaking out. The book then proceeds to social, legal, and sociomedical aspects of rape victimization, adding the special area dealing with the child as sex victim and then turning to policy. It makes the important point that our dating system between men and women is "a mutually exploitative arrangement of sex-role expectations which limit and direct behavior of both parties.... The man is taught to anticipate a sexual return on his financial and social investment." From this baseline, some aspects of rape are derived.
