Capillary blockade aids in evaluating myocardial perfusion
The principle of capillary blockade, now commonly used in pulmonary perfusion scanning, has been extended to the evaluation of myocardial perfusion.Investigators at University Hospital of San Diego County, say they obtained good clinical results in 29 patients by using macroaggregated albumin (MAA) labeled with 99m technetium or iodine 131. According to the report of Allan L. Simon, MD, at the recent Association of University Radiologists meeting in Durham, NC, the procedure seems to have these advantages over other forms of radionuclide coronary angiography:
"We have observed characteristic perfusion defects caused by obstructions of the major coronary vessels that correlate very closely
• the scintiscan image can be well controlled by selective catheterization,
• a single radionuclide injection makes multiple views possible,
• different radionuclides can be used to study various coronary branches, and
• there is "essentially" no body background radiation.
