Jean Baptiste Emile Vidal was born in Paris and received his classical training at the Lycée Condorcet.1 With his parents he moved to Tours; there he began medical studies which were completed in the faculty of medicine in Paris. Then followed service as an extern and later as an intern in the city hospitals and the granting of the medical degree in 1855, upon his fulfilling the requirements and submission of a thesis, Considerations on Chronic Primary Articular Rheumatism.2 The title page credits Vidal with a first prize awarded while he was preparing for medicine at Tours, and a silver and bronze medal from the hospitals of Paris. At the time his thesis was presented, the faculty included Cruveilhier as a member of the department of anatomic pathology, Andral in pathology and general therapeutics, Bouillaud and Trousseau in clinical medicine, Velpeau in clinical surgery, and Broca as associate.
