The Results of Irradiation Therapy of Carcinoma of the Cervix

The effectiveness of accurately applied irradiation therapy for carcinoma of the cervix was determined. In our study, 1,178 patients with carcinoma of the cervix were given primary irradiation therapy. Nine patients had primary surgical therapy and 15 patients had no therapy. External irradiation was administered first. On the last day of external irradiation treatment, radium was inserted into the upper vagina, cervix, and uterus. The patients in the various stages were grouped as follows: 422 patients had Stage 1 lesions, 426 patients had Stage 2 lesions, 286 patients had Stage 3 lesions, and 59 patients had Stage 4 lesions. The absolute 5-year-survival rates were 81% for Stage 1, 60% for Stage 2, 35% for Stage 3, and 3% for Stage 4. The over-all 5-year survival rate was 58.8%.
