The American Medical Association has created a Citizens Commission on Graduate Medical Education to study training programs for young physicians after they leave medical school.
Likened by AMA officials to the famed Flexner study of undergraduate medical education, the Citizens Commission will evaluate internship and residency programs to determine how the doctor may be best prepared to provide society with excellent medical care.
John S. Millis, Ph.D., president of Western Reserve University, Cleveland, will head the commission, which will be composed of 10 individuals with distinguished careers in public service and higher education. Millis said the full membership of the commission will be announced early next year. The survey is expected to require two years, and will be financed by AMA.
