ABSTRACT

Humphrey Attacks FDA.—  Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D., Minn.), in a Senate speech, charged that the Food and Drug Administration lacks ability to carry out the new drug law effectively.He accused the agency of failure to keep in touch with other government health projects and outside experts."Drugs have been approved which FDA now admits should never have been approved," the Senator said. "Drugs have been kept on the market long after FDA admits they should have been eliminated from the market."Humphrey said that "despite the deep interest of a few extremely talented M.D.'s and pharmacologists, high officials have apparently been content to let the (FDA's) bureau (of medicine) stagnate as a scientific organization."He called for "new blood" in the organization, and indicated his Senate Government Operations Subcommittee will hold hearings on the FDA in December.
