Many medical measures in addition to Medicare are before Congress as the legislative pace quickens.
The Medicare amendments are being considered by the House Ways and Means Committee. The related controversy over generic drugs is the subject of Senate hearings.
Another medical measure is extension of the federal program of health grants to the states. This gives the states the money in a lump sum instead of by categories such as venereal disease control. The states can allot the money among the various categories as they see fit. In addition, this measure contains funds for comprehensive health planning, a technical but disputed matter involving distribution of health facilities, equipment, and manpower. One provision calls for federal licensing of clinical laboratories. The House Commerce Committee is considering the bill.
