With the mass of increasing knowledge and the shortage of skilled teachers, programmed texts are assuming more importance in general education. Programmed medical texts are not yet common, and a good one is indeed rare. These books are designed to organize information systematically and facilitate its retention through progressive reinforcement. Systematic differential diagnosis in radiology lends itself to programmed instruction.
The Principles of Chest Roentgenology emphasizes normal pulmonary anatomy and classical roentgenogram interpretation. There is a thorough discussion of the silhouette sign and air bronchogram as in Dr. Felson's previous work (Fundamentals of Chest Roentgenology, Saunders, 1960). Dr. Felson's outstanding ability as an educator and clinician are amply demonstrated in this text. A specific orientation to the author's interest in rib notching is well presented
