The American Medical Association asked Congress to establish a National Commission on Health Resources and Medical Manpower to maintain a proper balance of health personnel among the military, the government, and the civilian population.
The recommendation was presented the Senate Armed Services Committee as it opened hearings on the Administration's proposals to change the draft. used by the Selective Service System for calling physicians to active duty. Finally, there is a need for a strong medical voice, at a highlevel position, within the Department of Defense."
One suggestion advanced by the AMA witness was the updating of an already existing single medical manpower roster which would be used during a "doctor draft" call by the Commission to determine from the total number of available phyject to call.
