LOANS FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

Medical students, interns, and residents must make a substantial investment in their professional training. Banking institutions will lend funds to these investors if they can be assured that the investment is "sound." The American Medical Association's Education and Research Foundation can certify to the "soundness" by guaranteeing repayment of the loan. These are the basic ingredients of the Medical Education Loan Guarantee Program described on pages 561 to 563 of this issue of The Journal.

There are several aspects of the new loan program sponsored by the AMA's Education and Research Foundation that merit special emphasis: (1) This program does not replace the fund-raising program for medical schools initiated by AMA through AMEF in 1950.
