Dana Winslow Atchley, M.D., Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York City, contributor to The Saturday Review, Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker in recent years, and author of a number of scientific periodicals in former years, is well qualified to discuss medicine as a career. Doctor Atchley, son of a Baptist minister, reflects a compassion for student and patient, stemming from his early training in the home and strengthened by almost half a century in the study and practice of medicine. It was interesting to learn that mathematics through calculus was recommended as a premedical requirement. More important is the belief that scholarly achievement is the most important tool a student can acquire in college and medical school-scholarly achievement based upon study in depth, be it physics, Elizabethan literature, or Greek mythology.
