Electrodiagnostic testing in neuromuscular disease has been described. The chronaxy determination is a stimulating test which should be done routinely in neuromuscular testing. It is a gross test, but it is very useful in determining the presence of denervation. Electromyography is a recording test and is more sensitive than a chronaxy determination. Electromyography can help in the diagnosis of lower motor neurone disease and in myopathic disease, because the findings in these are characteristic. Nerve conduction velocity determination is a stimulating and recording test. With it one can differentiate anterior horn cell disease from disease of the axone. One can also localize nerve compression when this condition is present.
