Originally published in 1910 by Hiss and Zinsser, this textbook has undergone many revisions and changes of title, the last in 1957. The present authors state in their preface that in the last 10 years most departments of bacteriology have expanded to include mycology and parasitology. The text has, therefore, been renamed Microbiology. In this edition, the chapter on general morphology and reproduction of bacteria has been rewritten. Other additions include a discussion of Asian influenza and the hemadsorption viruses. The public health aspect of each subject has been emphasized. New illustrations, some of them in color, have been provided.
The various sections deal with the general biology of bacteria and general methods of bacteriology, physiology of micro-organisms, ecology, immunology, pathogenic bacteria, spirochetes, the pleuropneumonia group of organisms, rickettsiae, viruses, mycology, parasitology, and technical methods.
