Gout is divided into sciatica, and podagra, and ciragra and arthritica. Indeed sciatica is arthritica of the hand; podagra is arthritica of the foot, and is like a type of lepra. Some arthritica therefore arises from hot air which dissolves too much, or from the cold which constricts too much, from which the humors grow rheumy in the joints; or from frequent bathing, or from sojourning among those having repletion; or from much food and drink, or from frequent coitus after lunch.—The Surgery of Theodoric, vol. 2, books 3 and 4, translated by E.
