IRRADIATION OF THE HUMAN FETAL THYROID GLAND FROM I131 FALLOUT

THE law of Bergonie and Tribondeau,1 applied to the production of thyroid cancer or hypothyroidism by irradiation, would suggest that thyroid abnormality could be produced in the fetal thyroid gland by a smaller dose of irradiation than is necessary in the infant or child. Similarly, a smaller dose of irradiation would be required in the child than in the adult. The communication "Radioactive Iodine Concentration in the Human Fetal Thyroid Gland from Fallout" appearing in this issue of The Journal, p. 1895, pertinently reports for the first time the detection of I131 in the human fetal thyroid gland from radioactive fallout.

In 1950, Duffy and Fitzgerald2 reported 28 cases of carcinoma of the thyroid gland in children under 18 years of age and found that 10 of them had received irradiation to the thymus in infancy. Since then, over 114 cases of thyroid cancer have been reported
