ABSTRACT

Scarcely a physician in practice remembers a time when, as he glanced down the cover of each issue of The Journal, he did not see a description of a new book from the W. B. Saunders Company. The Saunders box on the cover of this issue is unique. It contains a farewell message after 60 years and after more than 3,000 consecutive appearances. The position will be relinquished so that we may present a more attractive face to our readers. Although this small window through which the progress of medical publishing has been evident is now gone, it is not forgotten. A medical landmark does not vanish without some nostalgia—and so it is with us.

Some of us may remember when Saunders had an obvious half-page on The Journal. This brought to the attention of the practicing physician such excellent tomes as Labat's "Anesthesia," Abt's "Pediatrics," Beckman's "Treatment," and Bickham's
