Tissue necrosis and slough occurred in a patient with generalized arteriosclerosis after intravenous infusion of metaraminol during which extravasation occurred along the course of the vein. Previously, multiple intramuscular injections of metaraminol had been well tolerated, as had intravenous infusions. It is suggested that, when metaraminol is used, all precautions against tissue damage, such as polyethylene catheters and phentolamine, should be used after extravasation in the presence of vascular insufficiency.
