The first edition of this book appeared in 1940. The present edition contains much useful information, and the authors selected to prepare the various sections are among the most outstanding authorities in the United States. Unfortunately outdated material has not been entirely eliminated, and the book has not been completely modernized. Few if any neurological surgeons would today use the surgical approach for an acoustic neuroma illustrated in figure 1-15, page 12, or in figure 11-5, page 164. Figure 1-17, page 13, gives a most inadequate idea of the procedure of cerebral lobectomy. Not many surgeons would curve the incision for a subtemporal decompression forward, as shown in figure 1-20, page 16. In discussing the prognosis of the treatment of the benign astrocytomas of the cerebellum it should be pointed out that most of these patients can be permanently cured if they are properly treated.
