This is the first of a series of five reference volumes on tuberculosis edited by a clinician, a pediatrician, and a pathologist. Volume 2 will cover clinical aspects of pulmonary tuberculosis, stressing recent experimental methods; volume 3, modern thoracic surgery (a revised edition of Hein, Kremer, and Schmidt); volume 4, extrapulmonary tuberculosis; and volume 5, social and economic aspects of the disease, including education, prevention, vaccination, and rehabilitation. The editors state justifiably that there is a need for an up-to-date reevaluation of the clinical and experimental knowledge of tuberculosis since the era of antibiotics and thoracic surgery has changed our original concepts of the pathology, course of disease, and epidemiology. These volumes will be a critical analysis rather than merely a compilation of the literature. It is stressed that tuberculosis is still a major disease and is far from being eradicated.
