This new edition of a well-known book deals with physical education for the handicapped and for those with special health problems, preventive exercises, and adaptation of regular class work to meet the needs of children with transient or persistent physical handicaps. The volume is intended for use in orienting undergraduate and graduate physical education students in the corrective and adaptive phases of their work. Every school has its share of pupils with special physical problems. When modified physical education is available, this program can be helpful, in many instances, in rehabilitating pupils with remediable problems. It can also assist in helping those with irremediable problems to learn to live effectively with their handicaps. It is emphasized that in both situations the nature and extent of activity must be medically determined. In this framework, the authors visualize the physical educator as the skilled technician carrying out the exercise prescription.
