This textbook is intended for medical and dental students who are taking physiology simultaneously. It is clearly written. The author first reviews those parts of physical chemistry that apply to reactions occurring in solution. Then he considers "the commoner substances found in food and in tissue," special catalysts (enzymes) concerned in biochemical reactions, other substances of physiological importance, and the distribution of the substances in the tissues. In part 2, he treats digestion, absorption, and intermediary metabolism, together with oxygen metabolism, hormones, and vitamins. Part 3 he devotes to the body as a whole: its energy needs, food, and waste products. The sixth edition differs from earlier ones chiefly in the inclusion of new material on the structure of proteins, on coenzyme A and its role in metabolism, and on the synthesis of large molecules from small fragments.
