Franco Prize Awarded.  —The Generalissimo Franco national prize of $5,000, the highest award given in Spain to scientific researchers, was recently awarded to Dr. J. L. Rodriguez Candela and his collaborators, Jorge Tamarit, Rafael Rodriguez Candela, Walter Cristensen, and Pedro M. Goñi, for their work on the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. The experiments were based on American reports indicating that the amount of insulin required by a person after undergoing a total pancreatectomy is less than that required by the average diabetic patient. Previous experiments indicated that removal of the pancreas from dogs with alloxan diabetes would result in diminishing the requirements of insulin of the animals; however, it was not known whether the differences were caused by lack of internal secretion of the pancreas or by the disorder of intestinal absorption that results from the lack of ferments of the external secretion of the pancreas.
